Roman Weapons and Tactics

"Basic Equipment

  • Cassis- helmet
  • Lorica Segmentata- armor
  • Gladius- sword, 18-24 in. long
  • Pilium- medium-length throwing spear
  • Scutum- shield
  • Red Battle Cloak
  • Sandals
The cassis was a bronze general issue helmet. Many say it resembles a pot.
The armor was the lorica segmentata. It consisted of many plates of armor layered upon the one before it.
The gladius was a very effective sword. It was a smaller sword used for thrusting instead of a long, heavy one, because a long, heavy one took to much energy to fight with.
The pilium played a vital role in battle. It was a metal point attached to a wooden rod. The pilium was jabbed into the shield of an enemy and would break. The enemy could no longer use his shield, making him more vulnerable to death.
The Roman soldier's frontal protection was the scutum. It was a shield that stood 40 inches tall, and 30 wide. It was curved to give protection from the flank as well.
A long red cloak was worn during battle also. This no only kept the soldier warm, but it put fear into the eyes of the enemy as well.
A soldier is nothing without shoes. At that time, they had sandals. They were rugged and easy to repair."

This article tells about all the weapons and armory used in the roman military. Their swords were 18 inches to 2ft. They also had shields about 3 1/2 ft by 2 1/2 big. They also wore sandals, red cloaks, and battle armor.

"The rifle, invented in the 15th cent., is a firearm with a grooved, or rifled, bore that imparts a spinning motion to the bullet, giving it greater accuracy. (The principle of rifling the inner surface of the barrel is applied also to artillery.) Rifles first came into widespread practical use in the E United States. Because of its slow rate of fire and its manufacturing cost, the rifle remained relatively unused as a military weapon in Europe. Until the middle of the 19th cent. the musket was the standard small arm."

Between 1401 to 1500 the first rifle was invented. It was different than the musket because it made the bullet spin once it exits the barrel. Rifles were used the most in the eastern united states and weren't used in the European army until the 19th century because of how slow they fired.

Ancient peoples used very simple tools and weapons in their time. Most of the time the weapons that ancient peoples used were made out of sticks and stones. The bow and arrows are good examples, they also used knives that were really just a sharpened stone.

nuclear weapons

During WWII the United States had created nuclear weapons. After WWII the United States and the USSR had most of the nuclear power. But now countries are able to make their own nuclear weapons which could put the world at risk of a nuclear fallout.

"Modern Weapons

  1. Warfare had been forever changed by the World Wars, however, more advancements were made during the Cold War and beyond. Based on the concept of the atomic bomb, new generations of nuclear weapons were continually developed. Ultimately, a variety of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles were constructed that could destroy the entire planet many times over. During the late 20th century, precision-guided munitions were developed that allowed militaries to strike targets with accuracy using computer technology. Other inventions such as night vision, unmanned aerial vehicles and cyberwarfare revolutionized the way battles were fought by giving powerful nations a distinct advantage over less sophisticated enemies"
Weapons in the military have changed allot but the biggest improvement was during the world wars. Since then they have continued advancing with computers and technology. Now most all the weapons have gone into technology with computer guided missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

What I Want To Know About My Topic

I have many questions for my topic and I am sure I will have more before I am finished with it but my main question is How has military weapons changed over time? I also have questions that go with this question.

  • What types of weapons did ancient civilizations use in their armies?
  • What types of weapons did the roman empire use?
  • When were the first rifles invented?
  • What weapons were used during the civil war?
  • What types of weapons are we currently using in the military

What I Already Know About My Topic

I know that ancient civilization didn't have the same technology we have today but they had spears and bows and arrows.  As the Europeans came to America they started learning how to make rifles and pistols.  Then in the 1940's America invented the atomic bomb. As of right now the militaries of the world continue to grow smarter about how to make weapons like trip mines and grenades.

The Story Behind My Topic

I have always wondered what types of weapons people use in the military from the past and present.  I have read alot about how people from ancient times had wars, so i wanted to know what they used to have wars with.  Also I am taking JROTC and was wanting to get a head start and know a little bit about the military. My grandpa was also in the military and I wanted to what weapons he was assigned also. That is why i chose my topic about military weapons.
